USC Women in Molecular Biology

USC Women in Molecular Biology is a comprehensive student organization dedicated to supporting women, non-binary, and transgender graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in the Molecular and Computational Biology programs at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, CA. The organization addresses the unique challenges and intersectional issues faced by underrepresented genders in STEM academia, including pregnancy and childcare support, workplace safety, and advocacy against sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, and sexual harassment.

The organization provides multiple evidence-based support services tailored to the needs of its community. Safe Space initiatives offer designated times for students to decompress with refreshments and music while accessing information about campus resources. Professional development programming includes CV writing workshops, interview preparation seminars, and career exploration sessions featuring women in both academic and non-academic scientific careers. The organization also hosts regular social networking events such as game nights, yoga sessions, and holiday celebrations to build community among graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, professors, and departmental staff.

Beyond social and professional support, USC Women in Molecular Biology champions practical equity initiatives. The organization successfully advocated for free menstrual product availability in all women's and gender-neutral restrooms throughout the Department of Molecular and Computational Biology facilities, recognizing menstrual health as essential healthcare. Additionally, the organization facilitates Science in Society discussion sessions—monthly journal clubs that explore the intersection of molecular biology with contemporary social issues, fostering critical dialogue within the scientific community.
