About Canadian Federation of University Women Nelson and District

The Canadian Federation of University Women Nelson and District is a dynamic organization dedicated to promoting education, lifelong learning, and gender equality in Nelson, BC. Since 1967, this local club has been advancing the status of women and girls through scholarships, bursaries, and educational initiatives that benefit the community. As one of 26 clubs across British Columbia and part of a network of 100 clubs spanning Canada, CFUW Nelson & District brings together a diverse community of accomplished women who are committed to social justice, human rights, and public education. The organization hosts monthly educational meetings featuring accomplished speakers—from NASA aerospace engineers to healthcare professionals—covering topics ranging from aging in place to medical ethics. Beyond lectures and discussions, the club operates an active book club that meets monthly to foster intellectual engagement and community connection. CFUW Nelson & District also organizes signature fundraising events like the SIP Talks (Stories Inspire Passion), which showcase dynamic local women while raising funds for youth educational scholarships. Members participate in volunteer work, advocate for women's rights at the national and international level, and maintain affiliations with CFUW BC Council, CFUW National, and Graduate Women International. With 31 dedicated members, this Nelson-based organization continues the legacy established by CFUW's founding in 1919, working to improve the status of women and promote peace, equity, and education throughout the community and beyond.
